By regarding to tumor size, depth of invasion and lymph node metastasis, breast cancer is classified into five Stages: Stage 0, Stage I, Stage II, Stage III, Stage IV.
The tumor was confined to one place, cancer cells did not spread to the lymph nodes and did not invade neighboring normal tissue. If the Stage 0 breast cancer is early detected, clinical healing rate was 100%.
Stage I is divided into Stage IA Breast Cancer and Stage IB Breast Cancer. The tumor size is no larger than 2 centimeters, the tumor is completely limited to breast tissue. There is no adhesion between the tumor and the skin, tumor did not spread to axillary lymph nodes and any area of body.
Stage II is divided into subcategories known as Stage IIA Breast Cancer and Stage IIB Breast Cancer. The tumor sizes were 2 to 5 centimeters. There is adhesion between the tumor and the skin. Tumor has affected axillary lymph nodes and axillary lymph node enlargement, but the tumor has not spread further.
Stage III is divided into IIIA, IIIB, and IIIC. The tumor sizes is larger than 5 centimeters. There is adhesion between the tumor and the skin or chest muscle. Cancer cells have spread into axillary lymph nodes, axillary lymph node enlargement, but cancer cells have not spread further.
Stage IV also called late breast cancer. It including tumors of any size. Cancer cells have spread to the whole body, such as brain, liver, lungs, skin, bones and distant lymph nodes and so on.
Stage 0, stage I and stage II were defined as ESBC (early-stage breast cancer), the stage III and stage IV were defined as advanced breast cancer.
10-year survival rate for various stages of breast cancer:
Stage 0: 98 to 100%
Stage I: 90 to 95%
Stage II: 60 to 70%
Stage III: 20 to 30%
Stage IV: less than 20%
the cure rate of breast cancer depends on early detection. If the breast cancer is found early the prognosis is excellent.
