Blood Lipid Levels Should Meet the Standard

The attention degree of blood lipid reaching the standard is much behind than blood pressure reaching the standard. Generally speaking, diabetics attach much significance to the blood glucose because they know the complications of high blood glucose will have a serious impact on the health. Diabetics often put great emphasis on the alternation of blood glucose. For blood pressure, because most patients have no symptoms, the degree of attention is relatively low. As for blood lipid, patients have none apparent feeling, not to mention the examination of blood lipid levels. Without the examination results of blood lipid, useful information cannot be informed to the doctor, in this regard, the doctor cannot tell the patient how to solve the problem of high blood lipid.

In fact, high level of blood lipid is different from the concept of hyperlipemia (High blood lipid), which should be defined as dyslipidemia (abnormal blood lipid level); accordingly, treatment on this disease should be interpreted as regulating blood lipid instead of lowering blood lipid. What does it mean? Possible reason may be that some blood lipids are good, and some are bad, we wish that the good can be maintained in a high level, and the bad in a low level, namely, good blood lipids can be upregulated (elevated), whereas the bad ones can be downregulated (reduced).

What does the blood lipid contain? Firstly, the triglyceride, people must take medicine when there is an increase in the level of triglyceride. Secondly, the cholesterol, cholesterol generally refers to TC (total cholesterol). Thirdly, the LDL-C (low density lipoprotein-cholesterol), which is a part of cholesterol with a relatively lower density. LDL-C is a bad cholesterol. Therefore, it can be understand that bad blood lipids include triglyceride, TC and LDL-C, which may cause arteriosclerosis, resulting in the formation of thrombus, and even leading to the occurrence of coronary heart disease, stroke and lower limb necrosis, which should be downregulated. And the last is HDL-C (high density lipoprotein-cholesterol), which is a protective cholesterol that can remove the bad lipoprotein and protect blood vessels, we hope that this kind of HDL-C level can be unregulated. Therefore, the process of treating dyslipidemia is the regulation of blood lipid.

In addition, it is important to note that we cannot be satisfied with the situation of the patient’s blood lipid level up to the normal value of the standard of the hospital, there are some diabetics who always not bring the laboratory sheet of blood lipid when visit the hospital, just inform the doctor that his/her blood lipid is normal. In fact, the standard of blood lipid of the patient is more stringent than the normal subject. For example, the normal value of TG (triglyceride) in healthy person is 150 mg/dL, whereas it should be controlled under 135 mg/dL in patients with diabetes; the standard of TC (total cholesterol) is below 180 mg/dL in the hospital, but it should be better to below 135 mg/dL in diabetics; standard for LDL-C in the hospital is below 135 mg/dL, and the value of the diabetics should be controlled under 97 mg/dL, and LDL-C should be controlled below 77 mg/dL when the patient has coronary heart disease and diabetes. And the hospital set the value of HDL-C of over 38.6 mg/dL, and it should be over 42 mg/dL in the diabetics. In other words, standard for patients with diabetes is not the same as the standard for non-diabetics patients, which is much stricter. Why? Because diabetics are more likely to suffer from arteriosclerosis, coronary heart disease and stroke. Therefore, diabetics must take their laboratory sheets when visit their doctors.
The following table is the standard of blood lipid:

Diabetics can prepare a small card, and list all standards that should be reached, convenient for themselves to pay attention to blood lipids.

Additionally, there is one question for triglyceride. It not only has an influence in the diabetics, but also affects pancreas to cause necrotizing pancreatitis. What is necrotizing pancreatitis? Digestive juices will flow out of the pancreas when the pancreas is broken, and further digest the stomach and intestines, which is painful and dangerous. Hence, medicine for lowering triglycerides should be taken by these diabetics who have their triglyceride levels over 3 mmol/L.

What should diabetics do when the blood lipid is not up to the standard? Firstly, diabetics can choose to control diet and exercise; but blood lipid levels cannot fully meet the requirements just depend on diet control and exercise, most people should take medicine, which, however, can not be interrupted, since the blood lipid levels will be increased after drug withdrawal. Diabetics should insist on taking certain drugs to control blood lipids.
