Many patients with diabetes have a wrong idea, thinking that they can no longer eat sweet food. In fact, it's no need for patients with diabetes to decline the sweets. They can eat the sweets moderately by eating them in a proper way. Saccharides that can be eaten by the patients with diabetes are presented as follows:
Fructose mainly exists in fruits. Although its sweetness exceeds that sweetness of sucrose and glucose. Fructose can only be utilized by tissue cells upon converting into glucose in liver. Metabolism of fructose in the body is conducted without insulin, exerting little effects on glucose in the blood. What's more, the food containing fructose has a low glycemic index, so it's alright to eat it.
Under stable control of glycemic, the diabetes patients can appropriately eat some fruits like apples, oranges, strawberries, cherries, and pineapples. Please note that it shall not eat too much in one time.
Lactose mainly exists in the dairy and dairy products. The food containing lactose with a low glycemic index is slowly digested and absorbed in the gastrointestine, it won't increase the blood glucose easily after eating it. Moreover, calcium plays a role in stimulating pancreatic β cells, contributing to promote normal secretion of insulin. Therefore, it's suitable for patients with diabetes to drink 250ml milk every day, which can be divided into three times, that is, in the morning, afternoon and evening.
Polysaccharide mainly exists in the grains like flour, especially for those diabetes patients under the insulin treatment, whose sensitivity of insulin and glucose tolerance can be improved by intake the right proportion of carbohydrate, on the basis of reasonable control on total calories. So the diabetes patients don't need to reduce the proportion of carbohydrate in the total calories. If you don't eat the staple food, it is bad for blood glucose control instead.
Sweetener does not a part of saccharides, which belongs to non-nutrient sweetener, including saccharin, xylitol and sorbitol, etc. Its sweetness is 200 to 300 times of sucrose. Sweetener is merely used for improving food flavor in the food industry, which doesn't affect blood glucose levels. Thus, diabetes patients by eating it, can not only satisfy their taste buds, but also achieve the goal of controlling blood glucose.
