Monitoring of blood glucose is important to control diabetes, prevent the occurrence of diabetes complications and improve the quality of life in patients with diabetes. Generally, monitoring time of blood glucose for patient with diabetes is divided into seven points, that is, fasting blood glucose before breakfast, blood glucose before lunch and dinner, blood glucose 2 hours after breakfast, lunch and dinner and blood glucose before sleep. So, what is the significance of blood glucose control in various monitoring points?
Monitoring fasting blood glucose before breakfast
It represents secretion of basal insulin and checks whether medication used the night before can control the blood glucose until morning of the second day. Fasting blood glucose can indirectly reflect basic insulin secretion level of the body in the absence of stress factors; Also, fasting blood glucose can reflect long-term efficacy of medications. For the diabetes patients who use hypoglycemic agents (glucose-lowering agent) for a long term, good control of fasting blood glucose has important significance. Fasting blood glucose here refers to the blood glucose upon fasting of 8 ~ 12 hours, that is, the blood glucose under the fasting state in the morning, fasting before lunch and dinner is excluded.
Fasting glucose measuring is better to be conducted between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m., no hypoglycemic agents (glucose-lowering agent), no breakfast and no exercise before blood sampling.
Monitoring blood glucose before lunch and dinner
This will guide diabetes patients to adjust food intake and the injected amount of insulin before meals.
Monitoring blood glucose after breakfast, lunch and dinner
Blood glucose 2 hours after meals can reflect whether the ability of insulin secretion (especially early insulin secretion capacity after eating) is in good condition. For most patients with type II diabetes, monitoring blood glucose two hours after meals sometimes is more important than monitoring fasting blood glucose. As these diabetes patients might have low fasting glucose, but their insulin secretion functions are damaged, they will have a high blood glucose after meals due to their poor reaction upon stimulation of high glucose. Blood glucose two hours after meals can also reflect comprehensive treatment effect upon control of diet and medicine taking, facilitating to instruct diet and medicine treatment. It should be noted that monitoring blood glucose two hours after meals shall count the time from the first bite of the meal till 2 hours. Some people might count after the meal, whose results have obvious differences.
Monitoring blood glucose before sleep
It helps prevent nocturnal hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) at night or fasting hyperglycemia in the early morning. In the case of fasting hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), it shall monitor the blood glucose at night.
